Mental Health First Aid Training
An evidence-based program teaching how to respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training is an evidence-based program that teaches individuals how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. Participants learn to provide initial, supportive care to peers or loved ones in crisis, emphasizing empathy and stabilization until professional help is available.
The training is designed for everyone and is not intended to train people to be therapists, but rather to be a "first aider" to someone in distress.
Key Aspects of MHFA Training:
- Action Plan: Participants are taught the ALGEE action plan (Assess for risk, Listen nonjudgmentally, Give reassurance, Encourage professional help, Encourage self-help).
- Curriculum Focus: Training covers anxiety, depression, psychosis, substance use, suicide prevention, and self-harm.
- Training Formats: Courses are available in-person or virtually.
- Target Audiences: Specialized training is available for adults, youth, workplaces, and specific communities.
- Goal: To reduce stigma, increase mental health literacy, and provide confidence to help those in need.
